Your Child's Hero: YOU

My 7 year old nephew loves to draw.  His long term attraction to the simplicity of pencil and paper caught me by surprise.  So I started asking my sister about it.  Of course, she didn't take any credit, but she did let me in on a fabulous resource: Kids Art Hub.  The girls and I have been watching their 'How To' videos and thoroughly enjoying drawing together!  It has been SO FUN!

My one sweetheart and I created this lion together.  If you look closely, you can see how I created the face and she added his mane. I drew most of the body and legs, and she added the inside back leg and tail.  Then she colored it all herself.  Her artist expression delights me.  I love her layered colors and attempts at shading (maybe she just changed her mind midway and wouldn't call it shading).  I LOVE this lion because I see my daughter's expression in it.

This little drawing equally captures my heart!  This little cutie drew and colored this without collaborating with me and her fresh child perspective endears me.  I know that is a flower at the top of the little girl lion's head.  Can you see this little lion's tail?  Her signature eyelashes?  All four legs and feet?  I look at this drawing and see my daughter through it.  LOVE.

Our first, most successful attempts were with the 'How to Draw a Sword" video, here.  Then we had a great time with the rhinoseros in this video!

Besides the satisfaction of making REAL drawings that actually LOOK like something, the thing I love the most watching these videos is observing this fun Dad truly enjoy his kids while they draw together!  I love how he asks them, "do you want me to ...."  Instead of saying, "Oops, let me show you again."  Here he is, this genuine artist who passes his knowledge, skill and LOVE for art through FUN, CONNECTION, JOY and BONDING.

Watching him interact ON VIDEO with his little ones has inspired me to be a little better with my girls in Yellow Arrows during practice time.  I am going to celebrate more.  Giggle more.  And honor the individuality of my girls as they allow me to see their musicality.  I can do this!
